This little painting is the result of a fun workshop session at Windermere Art Society earlier this year. One of the other members demonstrated how to use texture to build up interesting effects when using acrylic paints. The texture included sand and clean eggshells, broken up into small pieces.

The textures inspired me to create this picture of an ocean reef complete with kelp, coral, and a fish. It’s all drawn freehand with the brush/paint – no pencil outlines – because we’d already prepared by painting the “canvas” (mountboard in this case) black.

I’m still a bit dubious about the fish – is it too small? Should it be more orange? But I hadn’t had that much fun since primary school and am oddly proud of the result. I’ve now stuck it in a cheap frame and am going to pop it up in my fishy-themed bathroom!
