One small step…
…for an artist… I’m busy getting ready for this year’s Windermere Art Society exhibition in August. With a total of seven new pieces of art to mount, title, frame and label, it’s surprisingly hard work. One down, six more to go!

A morning at Sizergh Castle
We’ve had a super morning at nearby Sizergh castle, a Grade I Listed, 14th century pele tower with later additions and stunning gardens. It was lovely to wander around in the warm sunshine. I took lots of photos and even managed this quick pen and ink sketch of the castle.

Sketching by Windermere
The forecast yesterday afternoon was for thunderstorms – absolutely typical as Windermere Art Society had an outdoor art session arranged. It didn’t look too threatening, though, so a handful of us went for it and had a smashing time. After one brief shower it cleared up and was warm and sunny enough to give me…

Old Kendal bridge
The other day we had coffee outside the Waterside Cafe on the banks of the River Kent in Kendal. They were busy and the drinks took a while to come, so I whipped out my sketchbook and drew the view of Miller Bridge. It’s a lovely old structure which dates from 1818 and still carries…

Green Door Artists
I’m absolutely delighted to announce that I’ve been accepted as a member of Green Door Artists’ collective / general support group, based in Kendal. It’s been a dream for the year and a half that I’ve been doing art, so you can imagine how excited I am! I’m really looking forward to getting to know…

Outdoor art in the rain

A soggy day meant the outdoor element consisted of dashing out to take photos and then retreating to the (very comfortable) residents’ lounge to chat, drink coffee and draw. A lovely social event. This is the front…

Rolling along…
There was supposed to be another outdoor art session for members of Windermere Art Society in Kendal yesterday. I really wanted to go because it was based in the grounds of Abbot Hall, a very beautiful Grade I Listed manor house on the banks of the River Kent, which would have been wonderful to sketch.…

Engrossed in art…
Apparently I get very engrossed when I’m sketching… This was taken by a fellow Windermere Art Society member at the Library Gardens event the other week. I didn’t notice until afterwards!

Sketching in public (gasp)
We strolled down to Windermere Jetty museum yesterday morning and treated ourselves to a coffee, sitting outside with the usual stunning views of the lake. I’m getting braver at sketching in public, so took a sketchpad and pen and plucked up courage to draw the view of the mountains at the head of the lake.…

Sketching trees (and people!)
We took advantage of the good weather yesterday evening (on a Tuesday, for a change!) for another outdoor art session for Windermere Art Society. A gang of us met up in the relaxing surroundings of Windermere’s Library Gardens to chat and sketch. This is a huge redwood tree in the grounds, drawn in fibre tip…
